Geocache Description:

F A K E M A P
BACKWOODS BEWILDERMENT

A
Branching
Multi-Point
AND
Multi-Route
Cache

Another first from the Llama¹

The cache is located somewhere up on a forested ridge. You have a choice of two routes of acsent. At the first waypoint you will have to decide which to take.

The distance and complexity of both routes are roughly the same, making this ideal for team play.

The two routes offer differing terrain. One route is fairly steep from the outset, whereas the other offers a more gradual acsent. The less steep route tends to be wetter and muddier since the water cannot readily drain away.

"You take the high road an' I'll take the low road and I'll reach the cache before ye"
- Bastardization of Loch Lomond

Some waypoints will direct you further along but most will present you with choices of where to go next. Choose well! Incorrect choices may lead to dead ends or perhaps in circles.

The coordinates at the top of the page lead you to a gate. Parking space is limited to 1 or maybe 2 cars if small. An old logging road leads into the woods from the gate.

The first waypoint is located at:
N47°47.870' / W122°35.326'

The distance from gate to cache depends on your choices but expect to travel at least 1.5 miles one-way. Give yourself PLENTY of time.

SPECIFICS

Waypoints are strips of pink surveyors ribbon and consist of three types:
Decision Point - Two ribbons with coordinates to two new locations.
Forwarder - One ribbon with coordinates sending you somewhere else.
Dead End - One ribbon that says just that. You will have to backtrack and choose a different route.

In addition to the pink ribbons, each route also has three orange BackNav ribbons. Since it's boring to see the same thing twice, why not make the whole loop? The BackNav ribbons guide you back along the route you didn't come in on. At one point, the two routes have a link to each other. You'll know you've started to loop when you find a 4th orange ribbon. If you find the cache but not a 4th orange ribbon, check your list of coords and it will be one you haven't visited yet.

For the dedicated, another option for team play is to run the course, then backtrack to the 1st waypoint and clear memory. Then switch routes and see if the same team wins again.

The cache is a large plastic jar with a screw on lid. It could be located anywhere along the route. Since I don't mention how many waypoints there are, you have no way of knowing if the next waypoint is a ribbon or the cache itself.

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. "Which road do I take?" she asked. "Where do you want to go?" was his response. "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."
- Lewis Carroll

TERRAIN / DIFFICULTY

You will be on graveled roads and dirt trails. Expect moderate elevation changes. ALL waypoints are located various distances off trail so expect uneven terrain and brush of varying density. GPS reception may be poor in some areas.
