Geocache Description:

The New Haven Green

Many, Many Special Thanks to the Lost Cachers for "Watching over this Geocache!"

This micro cache is located in New Haven, Connecticut. New Haven was the first planned city of the United States. Some fun facts about New Haven is that it was the birthplace of the:

  • First American Pizza Pie
  • First American Hamburger
  • Silly Puddy
  • First Frisbee
  • First P.H.D.
  • Inter Collegate Basketball Game
  • Erector Set
  • American Brasiere
  • Patented Bicycle
  • Vulcanized Rubber (Charles Goodyear is from New Haven)
  • Known Stained Glass window in a church depicting a firearm
  • Heart Lung machine
  • Computer

Thanks to CT Possum for providing me with some of the information above.

Also, New Haven is the home to Yale University. On the campus of Yale University, there is a place called the New Haven Green. The New Haven Green is a large lawn dotted with many trees. The New Haven Green is a perfect place to have a picnic, play frisbee, football etc. etc. Here you will find many students studying or playing around; so be very careful that you not be seen when finding this cache.

This micro cache is a film canister filled with a tiny pencil and two sheets of paper. Please sign your name, date, and where you're from on the "log sheet." Please save your comments for the computer.

**I'd like it very much if you bring your own pen along to sign this "log sheet," since pencil usually wears off.**

**Also,, it'd be nice if you brought your digital camera along for the geocache trip. I enjoy seeing people's pictures of their geocaching adventures.

Fun History:

When you go to the New Haven Green, you will notice that there are three churches. See, when the people of the early U.S. were planning to build New Haven, they decided to put the three churches in the middle of their city. After New Haven was "up and running," the heads of all the churches decided to make the New Haven Green their cemetery right near the churches - on top of the New Haven Green.

After a few years, the people of New Haven decided it was a bad idea to have there cemetery on top of the New Haven Green. [They didn't want a cemetery at the center of there town.] So, the churches moved the headstones to another part of New Haven - to create a new cemetery. Today, this new cemetery is called the Grove Street Cemetery.

But, the bodies of the headstones were never moved, and are still buried under the New Haven Green today......

According to the students of Yale University; every night, when its really dark outside - so dark you can't even see - the ghosts of the New Haven Green roam freely, looking for there lost headstones......

So, unless you're a fearless geocacher, I suggest being very careful when "night caching" for this micro.

Extra Credit:

If you are a geocacher who likes going the extra 1.27 miles; find out the names of all three churches on the New Haven Green. E-mail me [jdrummerlax@yahoo.com] the names of all three churches and do not include them in your log. If you answer correctly, I will put your name on the "Geocaching Extra Credit List," for all to see.

Have fun geocaching!!!
