Custer Peak Fire Lookout Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Team Family Affair: We are growing weary of the latest trend of people taking geocaches so we are retiring yet another stolen cache. This area is inundated by ATV and UTV traffic anyway so it is not the hiking area it used to be. Regretfully we are retiring this 16 year old cache.

Geocache Description:

Big thanks to the Lovebug Family for updating this cache for us with a new container and goodies! You guys are awesome!

Custer Peak L.O.

Custer Peak Lookout Cache is located about 7 miles south of Lead at an elevation of 6804 feet above sea level. Custer Peak was named after General George Armstrong Custer after he traveled through and explored this area in August of 1874.  From this peak you get a great view of the North Central Black Hills. The fire Lookout tower was constructed in the summers of 1937 and 1938 , is now on the National Historic Lookout Register and is still occasionally manned during the summer forest fire season.  The cache was located on a little knob that is just a hundred feet or so to the east of the lookout tower giving another great view but now has an updated container and location (new coordinates are listed above).

To find this cache: Travel South of Deadwood on Highway 385 until you reach the area of N44 15.20 W103 41.85 and turn west onto the gravel road.  When you reach the Y in the road (at N44 14.16 W103 43.60) continue west (to the right)  and wind your way towards the lookout tower on Custer Peak.  You will have to park and walk up the last little bit to reach the lookout tower and great view of the area all around. The cache was a camouflaged waterproof tube painted green with Geocaching.com stenciled on the side and more recently was replaced with a small ammo can.

Here are your clues:

  • Rocks as sentinels guard the item you seek.
  • Trees and underbrush are also close at hand.

We hope you enjoy this cache as much as we did creating it and please don't forget to leave it well hidden and camouflaged!

-Team Family Affair
