Geocache Description:

This cache was placed for GAGE 4. It's been many years since the voyageurs paddled their big Montreal freighter canoes up the Ottawa River. They were an instrumental part of building this country and many voyageurs portaged around the rapids right here in Ottawa carrying huge packs and heavy canoes to bypass the great chutes on the river. Of course the river has changed a great deal since the voyageurs were forced to portage around the mighty rapids here. This short multi-cache will take you on a walk along one of the old portage routes - a little known National Historic trail right here in the heart of the city. The posted coordinates take you to a granite marker in a park. There are some objects on the marker that probably won't be a surprise based on the title of this cache. Write down how many of these objects appear on the marker = X The marker directs you to follow a nearby path where you will find a plaque (See Note below). The plaque is located B00 yards down the trail... according to the granite marker. The trail you're walking on was made a national historic trail on June 8, 195C (see the plaque) The plaque was placed here in 19Y5 and contains some interesting information on the trail. The first European explorer came down this way in 1613. How many letters in his last name = D. David Thompson is one of my favourite explorers from Canadian history. Don't tell me he wouldn't have given his eyeteeth for a GPS. The plaque lists several explorers that walked this trail in various centuries. David Thompson is listed in the group from the last century. Of course we know it was the century before last, I guess the plaque needs updating now that we've entered a new millennium. What position does David Thompson appear in the list of Canadian explorers that trod this path in the "last century"? = Q One quick calculation needed (shouldn't need your laptop for this). D-Y-C= A I think you have all you need to find the cache. It is located at N 45 XY.ADX W 75CC.BXQ The cache is located a short distance off the path. It is kid friendly though you might want to keep an eye on them as its pretty rocky and the river can be swift at certain times of the year. It is winter accessible; again, there is open moving water here year round so be careful. You wouldn't want to take a swim in February. It is accessible as a night raid but in the summer, some of the local teenagers may already be about having a little "social gathering" so use your own judgment. Please do not post any spoiler photos the marker - as they will have to be deleted. NOTE: - Feb 25/07 I've added some photos of the plaque as it was taken down in the fall of '07. I guess the plaque is not coming back so I've put some photos up so you can do this cache. Enjoy your visit to this interesting spot. And extra points if you choose to do it with a 200lb pack of furs on your back, of course that is strictly optional.
