I haven't been on this road for over 30
years when I used to come over to Hahei on diving trips. Saw
a great opportunity for a cache and couldn't resist putting
one down. The Tapu Coroglen Road is gravel but our gallant
Mitzy handled it alright.
The car park is at S 36° 59.386' E 175° 34.326'.
The cache is only 170 m away but you need to climb nearly 200
steps, hence the terrain rating.
The tree has the typical spreading head and
massive trunk of the mature kauri. Although not one of the true
giants, it is probable one of the better known of the remaining
larger trees. Thanks to its unusual appearance a gentlemen's
agreement protected the Square Kauri during the logging which
accompanied the building of the Tapu Coroglen Road during the
1890's.
