From Hwy 50, go North from Rawhide mine road in Dixie Valley. This raod is well maintained until you clear the Elctronic Warfare range, then it gets sandy and loose gravel. A small car can get here if you are careful.
La Plata is the Spanish word for "Silver".
This Ghost Town got its name for being a silver mining town and was the second county seat of Churchill county from 1864-1868.
Several remainders of those days are strewn about but the Court House, just below the cache and a great place to park, is the best feature left.
Be careful if you explore the area, as there are mine shafts that you can fall into.
Also, beside the snakes and scorpions, several people have seen a Mountain Lion in this area, so keep your little ones (children and dogs) close to be cautious.
The cache is a .50 cal ammo can painted to blend in.
One more word of caution, if you are in a small car, don't try to go to Moutain Wells cache from here. As luck would have it for team Geo Dice Men, Team Boogsar arrived to pull them out of the snow just in time.
