Located on the grounds of the Amory Regional Museum which is housed in the old Gilmore Sanitarium (hospital) circa 1916. Entry to the museum is free, the hours are: Tuesday through Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday & Sunday 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Amory was established as a railroad town, which caused the demise of the nearby town of Cotton Gin Port. The area was first visited by the French explorer Bienville in 1736, who built a small fort and fought the local Chickasaw nation. He soon returned to Mobile and left the area to the encroaching British. Americans first settled the area in 1808.
