Fort George Island is the southernmost

of the sea islands along the Northeast Florida , Georgia ,and South Carolina coasts. A surprising variety of flora and fauna is found on the island, from ferns and orchids to foxes and

almost 200 species of birds.

Now for today’s history lesson…..the history of Fort George

Island is a cross section of Florida ’s history. Surrounded by

lush vegetation, there are many historical and geographic

points of interest on the island. It contains the longest

record of civilization in Duval County ranging from shell

mounds that date back 7,000 years, through plantation

era structures, to a 1920’s era resort club.

One of the geographic points of interest is Mount Cornelia .

At 65 feet above sea level it is reputed to be the highest

point along the Atlantic coastline south of North

Carolina ’s Outer Banks. This abrupt slope marks the

southern end of an ancient dune field paralleling the island’s

northeast shoreline. Mt. Cornelia also served as

the tee for the 18th hole on the old Fort George Golf Club

which was opened in the 1920’s. The golf course was

closed in 1991 and since then nature has been, not so

slowly, reclaiming the land.

There is a parking lot at the Ribault Clubhouse which was

built in 1928. From the parking lot head north along the

biking/hiking trail that parallels the old 18th fairway. After

about a quarter of a mile you will come to the base

of Mount Cornelia . The cache is located on top of

the “mountain”. You can continue on the biking/hiking trail

toward the top. The stated coordinates should place you

in the center of the old 18th tee box. The cache is a

large camouflaged ammo can

that is located 26 feet north of

this center spot. It contains a log and several

small trade items.

It is always a good idea to bring your own pen.
