Next stop, Castaic Junction Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

SoCalAdmin: Greetings from Geocaching.com

It looks like your cache has been temporarily disabled for a while now and is still under the weather.

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

If you wish to repair this cache and have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link of your cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

Having caches marked as “temporarily disabled” for extended periods of time is very irritating to local cachers because these caches will still show up on their TO-DO cache lists.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and I am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the near future.

Thanks for your understanding,

SoCalAdmin

Geocache Description:

You can drive to within 50 feet of each of these hides

Note: Each leg of this cache will require either a long walk or a short drive. Total distance is aprx. 2 miles.

The above coordinates will take you to site #1 :

This area, Santa Clarita, used to be called San Francisco and HUGE in comparison to today. Back then it continued way past the Ventura County line.. The area we now consider San Francisco was then called Yerba Buena. In 1804 a sub-mission of Mission San Fernando existed very close to this spot.

Later this was the aprx location of the Castaic Train Station, built by Southern Pacific in 1887. It was destroyed in the St. Francis Dam Disaster of March 12th 1928 when the dam failed and sent a 180' wall of water west to the ocean, killing over 450 in the process. The tracks are gone now too. The only sign that tracks were here is the Santa Clara River "Train" Bridge aprx 1/2 mile from the final cache location.

You are looking for an Altoids can that contains the coordinates for cache site #2 and 1/2 of the coordinates for the final cache location.

As you travel to site #2 you are actually driving along what used to be US Highway 99. When you reach the cache site you will be standing on the location of an old weigh station.

You are looking for an Altoids can that contains the other 1/2 of the coordinates for the final cache location.

This Weigh Station existed until 1964 How it looks today

Now that you have both halves of the coordinates make your way to the final cache, a coffee can.

The Santa Clara River "Car" Bridge was built in 1916 as part of the Ridge Route from Los Angeles to Bakersfield. It too was destroyed in the dam disaster. The replacement bridge, where the final cache is hidden, was re-built in 1928. Notice the railings on each side of the bridge do not match, this happened during the widening of the bridge.
