Geocache Description:

Once you've found Part 1,,, this cache is only 0.3 miles further along the track. GZ is very close to the track, and should be very easy to find. The new cache is smaller than the old one, but has room for small swaps. If you leave a TB, pls write it on the log sheet ... if you take one, you must log it at Geocaching.com ASAP, Thanks x

Hovertrain Experiment: 1970

Prof. Eric Laithwaite (1921 - 1997) - was a 'maverick engineer' who deeply offended, and was ostrasized by, the scientific community for daring to question Newtons Laws of Motion. He investigated strange properties of gyroscopes and later patented a new type of 'space drive'. At the end of his life he was working for NASA on a type of maglev railway to launch spacecraft into orbit. (The Maglifter)

The Royal Institution found his ideas VERY Hard To Swallow!

Inventer of the Linear Electric Motor, he built the worlds first monorail train to use hovercraft and linear motor technology. His prototype, the RTV31, reached speeds of 100mph on a one mile length of track alongside the Old Bedford River south-west of Sutton-Gault

The Hovertrain
The Hovertrain prototype seen here 'in flight'
is now a static exhibit at Railworld in Peterborough

In the early 70's the government of the day stopped funding the project, and it was left to Germany and Japan to pursue further research on maglev trains that now reach speeds of 350mph.

To find this cache, you will walk the length of his experimental track - sadly very little is left to be seen of the track itself, but you'll be walking near to the finest wetland area in Europe. Lots of birds to be seen!

After parking at Sutton Gault, walk 1 mile southwest alongside the Old Bedford River - an artificial canal constructed in 1650 to drain the Fens.
