Geocache Description:

Aaaah, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet! Come visit what the Seminole Indians refered to as Fumecheliga (Musk Mellon Place).

Renamed Fort Maitland by the U.S. Army in 1838 in honor of Captain William Seton Maitland. During the Seminole Wars, the only way to reach central Florida was by steamboat from Jacksonville, down the St. John's River to Fort Mellon (now Sanford). Horseback or foot travel brought you to this rest stop before continuing on to Fort Gatlin (now Orlando). Maitland Avenue was part of the Old Black Bear Trail which connected Montreal to St. Pete Florida and passed by the fort. Nothing of the fort remains, only a nice little park sporting the name. For more history of Maitland, visit this site.
