Geocache Description:

A challenging hike with a terrific view

People geocache for different reasons. I do it for the challenge. I do it to find or guide people to excellent locations. If you are in good condition, love to hike, and like getting to places many will not attempt, this is a cache for you. The trail is very steep.

Wilderness navigation leaves the route choice up to you. This is how I got there…

I entered the area at the intersection of Highway 330 and Forest Road 1N09 (N34 10.611 W117 09.240). 1N09 is best traveled with a high-clearance vehicle, but I made it with my mini van by taking it slow and being careful. I drove for ½ hour until arriving at N34 10.514 W117 06.836. I parked there and began my hike at N34 10.542 W117 06.844. The elevation is about 3,800 ft. Finding the route to the correct ridge is tricky. If you go to N34 10.654 W117 06.737 you will find a faint trail that will lead you to N34 10.654 W117 06.705. From here, you just follow the trail up the ridge. It is very steep but easy to follow.

The trail will lead you to one of the great area landmarks that can be seen from the whole valley below. The landmark is at about 5,200 ft.

To find the cache, you have another 400 ft elevation gain. The trail starts at N34 11.029 W117 06.267. This trail is very overgrown and less friendly than the one used so far. Follow this to N34 11.043 W117 06.245. At this point the trail ends, as you will have reached the area affected by the recent fires. Head up from there, but remember that point so you can find your way back.

The cache is a 30 caliber ammo box. It is hidden between a couple large rocks, with a small one (1/2 the size of the ammo can) on top to keep it out of view of non-cachers. The elevation is about 5,600 ft.

There are certainly other ways to reach this cache, but I think this is the most enjoyable. My trip was about 2 miles round trip from where I parked with 1,800 ft elevation gain. Make sure you bring an Adventure Pass (visit link)

Have fun and enjoy the view!
