Geez Louise was a somewhat failed attempt to bring an "extreme
caching" experience to WNY. It is a 3-leg multi-cache in the Great
Baehre swamp of Amherst, that was inspired by a couple of swamp
caches in an area of Central New Jersey that I used to frequent.
When placed in the Spring of 2004, it involved sloshing through
8-12 inches of stagnant swamp water. Only to find out the section
of the swamp where the cache is dries out nicely during the summer
and fall. Doh!!
Most of the cache is located in Margaret Louise Park, a 48 acre
town park. But there is also an adjoining parcel (137 Acres) of
State Land, as well as a 270 acre parcel of state land on the other
(east) side of Hopkins Road.
Park at N 43 Deg. 00.823' W 078 Deg. 44.341' to begin your
adventure. Seeing as the intention was to slop through 8-12 inches
of swamp water, the first two legs are not micros, but small
tupperware containers, and are not terribly far apart. The end
cache is a .30 cal ammo box, well hidden. Whether you encounter
standing water or not, you will experience an old growth forest
that will make your needle dance like nothing you've seen in the
metro Buffalo area, and of course killer mosquito's in season.
There are no trails, and terrain is rated at 3.5 stars for numerous
(and I mean it) downed limbs.
