This magical place, the site of maccamob’s one hundred and sixth cache, is located south of Portland on part of the 250km Great South West Walk, which loops from Portland to Nelson and back. The cache was also placed in response to the request by Team Crackers’ sister, who commented that there were no caches in her area.
Gnarled, knotted trees cling here for their existence, and their interlocking branches form a tunnel over the path. Creepers hang from above. Take time to listen for the sea birds, magpies and black cockatoos. Look for the wildflowers and the amazing native vegetation that changes as you descend into the forest. Enjoy the peace with just the sound of the timeless sea on the rocks below, and enjoy the dramatic views along the coast from several vantage points. After finding the cache you can continue along the path as far as you wish. When you return to the car park, complete the drive to the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, stopping at several lookouts along the way. The Portland Visitor Information Centre has maps of this drive and others in the district, as well as of the Great South West Walk.
The track can be popular at times, so be vigilant. As usual, please make sure you return the cache to its exact hiding place and ensure that it is not visible to passers by.
