A perfect picnic spot with a view near Old Bells trail, enjoy the
spring flowers while they last!
The Old Bells trail is steep and eroded and not really recommended
when slippery or without sturdy footwear. One doesn’t have to use
this historical track, since the final part is also easily
accessible from the official Bells Canyon trail.
The Old Bells trail is clearly visible just West of Part I. It
gains the ridge of Little Cottonwood glacial moraine and crosses a
ridgeline track at
N 40°34.160 W 111°47.470 (stay on a higher track if in doubt
until you reach this point), and then gently traverses towards the
top of Bells Canyon moraine, crossing it at
N 40°33.998 W 111°47.344. The trail then drops towards 3-way
junction at
N 40°33.971 W 111°47.330, where a short spur trail heads West
to a mine dump and a more prominent track continues South and
merges into main Bells Canyon trail.
The 1st part is a micro (a two-inch tall aluminum canister). The
cache proper is now an ammobox. The cache originally contained
trinkets, coins, and genuinely useful things for a hiker, as well
as Brian’s Buggs Bunny T-Bug.
Special thanks for the inspiration go to ‘39Geezer, who couldn’t
wait till I place a non-puzzle cache, and to Cach-U-Nuts who
specifically asked about this old track because of the new
restrictions on official trails leading into Bells.
