This cache has been archived.

swkmtnbiker: I dont live near the cache now and have not had the time to set another box. I am going to archive it for now and hope to put it back up as a virtual cache. This is a great place to visit and there have been so many nice comments logged.

Thanks

Pulpit Falls

Pulpit Falls

  • Location : public land in Winchester, southeastern New Hampshire
  • Height : 12 feet
  • River/Stream : Pauchaug Brook
  • Water Levels : moderate-low, best time to view falls is winter to mid-summer
  • Photographs : see uploaded images
  • Description : Under heavy shade from the closely surrounding hemlock trees, this falls cascades down into a small pool that then empties down a gradually sloping rock face into another pool. The main cascade has carved a pothole formation into the ledge over which it falls, creating an interesting sight. Rock walls about ten feet high surround the pool, which creates an interesting picture. In higher water, the water may also create several different parallel cascades.
  • Caves :  Explore either side of the brook and find several caves.
  • Driving Directions : From the intersection of NH-119, NH-10, and NH-78 in Winchester, NH, (southwest corner near the Mass-NH border), go south on NH-10. After 2.7 miles after going downhill for a while, there is a pull-off next to the road on the right as you go around a curve. The trail starts on the other side of the road opposite the pull-off.
  • How to Find The Falls : From the parking area, cross the road and follow the path. It is somewhat blazed with blue paint. The only fork in the path is after the trail crosses over a small stream. At this point, go left. The trail is not blazed coming back so make sure you look carefully for the blazes. Total round trip : 1.2 miles over fairly easy flat terrain.
  • Safety Considerations: BE CAREFUL unloading the car and crossing the road at the parking area. The road is curved and the cars go very fast.. Also use caution at the falls, especially with children; there are steep hills and rocky ravines. This is probably not a good area to bring the young ones to.
  • Travel Bug Info : If you should find a travel bug in this cache or any other cache, please be sure to log it electronically twice, once when you grab it and again when you put it in another cache. This must be done so it’s travels can be tracked. You must be a signed on member to do this. If you are not a signed on member of geocaching.com and do not intend to become a member, please do not take the travel bug. Membership is free. Join up and get in on the fun. Please drop the bug into another cache in a reasonable amount of time.
