This one is for hikers. The terrain is moderately difficult. Bring a hiking stick if you have one, also bug spray in season, and a water bottle. Wear boots.
From Aquidneck Island, or north, take the Tiverton exit (route 77) from route 24, and head south on Main Road. Watch for the green "Fort Barton" sign on the right. Turn left on Lawton Road, and drive to the top of the hill. The parking area is across the street and slightly to your right.
Walk up the steep paved driveway to the left of the parking area. At the top of the hill, there are benches, from which you can enjoy scenic views to the west and south. A new lookout tower is now open.
The mounds and pits are all that remains of a Revolutionary War fort. From here, the Continental Army kept the British at bay during the occupation of Aquidneck Island (1776-1779). And from here, Continental guns covered General Sullivan's advance and retreat during the Battle of Rhode Island (August, 1778). Save some time to sit and enjoy the views after your hunt. You are very close to two other cache locations, so you have a chance for a "threefer."
Head east, down the steep stairway, and follow your GPS. You will pass close to private property. Do not cross any fences or stone walls. There are many intersecting trails in the area. You may want to use the backtrack feature on your GPSr.
