Geocache Description:

Located on the Crane Tower in the desert near Huff Road and Wheeler Road. Altitude of cache is appx. 90 feet. This is a central point with lots of trails leading to this area. A common rest stop for dirt bike and ATV riders.

Cache is a small mint tin painted white. Yes, you will have to climb a set of stairs, walk on an I-Beam and then climb 3 (not 4 or 5!) ladders to get close to this cache. Do not walk on the roof of this structure as it has been damaged by falling rocks! The view in all directions will be the biggest payoff. If you are an Illyngophobite (Fear of vertigo or feeling dizzy when looking down) or an Acrophobite (Fear of heights), the rating for this cache is infinity! Enjoy your visit!

Some History from an Air Force Historian and Ask Alice from the San Diego Reader:
It is the remains of the old Whirl Tower used for parachute testing. A heavy motor in a pear-shaped pit would turn a belt that would twist a tall vertical shaft. A teardrop shaped vehicle at the end of a tether would be whirled horizontally until a desired speed was reached, whereupon a test parachute would be deployed and its forces measured. It was used for ejection seat chutes, nylon retarding chutes used on bombs, and big paradeployment chutes used to drag cargo out of C-130s. Several world records were set there. The Navy built it in the 1960s and abandoned it soon after, when it didn't work properly. It's under the jurisdiction of the Navy base at China Lake.
