Geocache Description:

This is a very steep ridge climb. Ridge is narrow but there is lots to hold onto for 4/5th of the hike.

I’m calling this cache “Where the Easter Bunny Chickens Out” because as I was preparing it I had no idea if I would make it to the top or chicken out somewhere along the way. Of course the day I placed it is/was Easter Sunday 2004. I made it to the top and so the Easter Bunny did not chicken out.The cache is on a flat topped peak know as Pu`u Manamana and is somewhat out of sight.

The hike is described by Stuart Ball in his book “Hiker’s Guide to O`ahu” (revised edition) on page 202. If you don’t already own his book you should go out and buy it. It is the best hiking book for the island of O`ahu with detailed maps and trail descriptions. Stuart rates this hike as for Experts with a high danger level. But that is only if you follow the route in his book. There is a safer but still dangerous way to get to Pu`u Manamana. Drive up Trout Farm Road and park in front of the old broken down building near the end of the road. It is on the mauka side of the road. This broken down building was once a church and up hill from it is a very old and un-kept cemetery. This is a quite neighborhood. Be mindful of the people who live there. Don’t make a lot of noise. If someone asks what you are doing just tell them you are going hiking. Walk to the right of the “church” up hill thru the cemetery. Bare a little left near the upper end of the cemetery.

There should be a pink ribbon marking the trail. From now on you are on your own, no more directions. Ok one last one. You stay on this ridge all the way to the top. You can’t get lost as there is no place to go but up. You have to climb to the top of this ridge. It should take you between 3 and 4 hours to reach the summit. There are good strong cables to get you past the worse parts. After about 10 minutes you will come out of the forest and be on an almost barren ridge for a while. There is one rock face to scramble around, but the cable is strong and safe. At time you will be using your feet and hands to scramble up the ridge. After about ½ hour total you will be back in heavy growth which helps to keep you safe. There are lots of tree trunks to hold on to and to pull you up. BUT THE RIDGE IS NARROW ALMOST ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP. By narrow I mean it averages perhaps 3’ wide with the trail about 1’ wide in the middle of the ridge.
