Don't let the number of stages scare you! This is a great cache
for the whole family. Everyone that tries it really likes it! Read
the logs below to see what people have to say about this cache!
This is our first attempt at hiding a cache, so we wanted to
make it easy, fun, and educational. All together it is about a
1-mile walk on mostly level hard pack. It is very scenic so take
your time and enjoy what is going on around you. Bring your stale
bread and fishing rods, there are ducks, geese and even a few swans
looking for a hand-out during the spring and summer months. Fishing
in the lake is good, but it gets overgrown with algae later in the
summer. You may also want to bring the bug repellent during the
mosquito season. Controlled pets are welcome but remember to clean
up after them. There are many garbage cans around so there is no
excuse not to.
In the early 20th century, coal truly was king. When a coal mine
played out, it was simply abandoned and a new one dug into a nearby
vein. In an attempt to be the richest nation on earth, there was no
attempt to reckon the environmental costs of economic progress. And
so today, underground, we are left with a damaged environmental
legacy, rust colored streams that stifle aquatic life. After decades
of living with orange streams that mine water had made
uninhabitable for fish and unusable by humans, a group of local
people got together to do something about it.
In 1993 more than 50 area community and government agencies,
industries, and individuals formed The Loyalhanna Creek Mine
Drainage Coalition to help clean up Four Mile Run. Their work is
what you will view while on part of your hunt. Please pick up a
brochure near the first coordinates that will tell you all about
this project, as it is an. interesting one. Take the brochure with
you on the hunt then please return it to where you got it if you
have no further use for it.
A little about the lake: 30-35 years ago, this was a very
popular fishing hole in the summer and an ice skating rink in the
winter. In the summer they used to anchor several raft type
platforms in the middle of the lake to swim out to. You could use
them for jumping, diving, or even sun bathing. In the winter they
used to drive a jeep onto the ice to test it for safety before
anyone went ice-skating. Then came the era of lawyers, greedy
people, liability, and lawsuits that forced the College to stop
participating in the support of this once popular recreation
area.
The cache is in a brown 50 cal ammo box filled with a lot of fun
things. Please trade fairly, thanks.
Warning: Parts of this route may be muddy after a hard rain.
