Geocache Description:

Finding this multicache will take you through the Goldsmith Woodlands and along the shore of Foster's Pond. This will take a while. At a brisk walking pace you will reach the cache in about 30 minutes. Please keep in mind that the area is closed after dark so you should start no later than one hour before sunset. No bushwacking required except for the last 10 feet.

Goldsmith woodlands is a beautiful area for hiking and nature watching. You may see a deer wander by or an osprey fly overhead. During the early 20th century, Goldsmith Woodlands were a favorite summer retreat. Bessie Goldsmith was the original landowner. She collected rent from those who had cottages on her land. Cellar holes and swing hinges on trees are still visible. One of these cottages belonged to Zack, a caretaker of these woods and a handyman for the summer residents. His name lives on in the designation of Zack's way, Zack's house and Zack's hop pit, a large cellar hole on the hill overlooking the pond. Start at the parking lot on Route 28 (South Main Street). The coordinates are N 42.36.632 W071.07.406. Stay on the main dirt path. After 0.6 miles on your right you will see Zack's cellar hole. Sixty feet away on the other side of the main trail is Zack's hop pit. It looks like an ancient cellar hole. Hidden in the hop pit is a green mini-M&M candy tube. Inside the lid you will see written coordinates. These coordinates will lead you to the cache. As you continue along the path you will be walking along a glacial esker which is a ridge formed out of sediment that flowed through giant cracks in the glacier. The original cache box was muggled but the new replacement one has been moved less than 100 feet from the original location.
