This is a 1.5 mile hike up Buck Mountain, a small mountain in the Champlain Valley.
The views from this cache atop Buck Mountain are of Lake Vermont, the prehistoric glacial lake formed between 10,000 -12,000 years ago. Several episodes of ice advance and retreat during the Wisconsin glaciation created large bodies of water, larger than Lake Champlain, that have long since disappeared. The Champlain Valley was inundated, first by fresh water which has been named Lake Vermont and then later by salt water, known as the Champlain Sea. Now, it is beautiful farmland, with Lake Champlain and the mountains beyond. Bring along a picnic and enjoy the view during any season.
The distance to the cache is about 1 mile long “as the crow flies” or about 1.5 miles long as the trail goes. Please be sure to follow the trail. This is a wonderful little hike and the views at the top rival those found at sister mountains, Philo and Snake. The trail can be quite wet and muddy, especially in the very beginning and always so in the spring. Be sure to leave a change of footwear in the car for when you return. If you’re going in the winter, it’s a great snowshoe trek- especially after dark under a full moon.
This adventure begins by locating the parking coordinates of N44 08.330 W073 13.621, where you’ll find a pull-off at the height of a dirt road called Route 66. The trail begins at the pull-off. Follow the trail carefully, as there are several side trails that could confuse you. I suggest you keep the parking coordinates handy for the trip back down, as the side trails that will tempt you on the way up are different from those that will tempt you on the way down. The key is to follow the most traveled route. Once you’ve caught your breath while enjoying the view at the top, look for a large ammo box. Please use the camera in the box to take your picture and write in the log about your adventure.
