This cache is located on the shortest peninsula in Maine (at least that's what we were told). The Nelson Nature Preserve, owned and managed by the Mid-Coast Audubon Society, is on Route 97. The preserve covers 95 acres and includes diverse habitat, from upland mixed forest to a unique red maple swamp fronting the Goose River. This is an excellent spring birding location for warblers and year-round for dense forest-dwellers such as thrushes and woodpeckers. On our first visit here in September 2002, we encountered a moose.Look particularly at the wonderful mosses and lichens that grow here. It is truly a memorable spot. That's why we've chosen to fill the lock-and-lock placed here with memory items from Maine. Please continue the theme. Check the trail map in the parking lot and begin on the South Trail. From there stick to the trails until your GPS shows 50 feet from the cache. Along the trails to the cache note on your GPS that you cross the 44th parallel.
