Geocache Description:

A Museum of History? In Pasadena? Who knew?

LarsThorwald did! At least, we do now, although we have to admit we've been driving by this spot for years and had no idea what we were missing. Founded in 1924 as the Pasadena Historical Society, the Pasadena Museum of History operates the only Museum and Research Library devoted solely to preserving and educating the public about the history of Pasadena and the west San Gabriel Valley. It's a fascinating - and somewhat shizophrenic - place, tucked into the 2.1 acre grounds of the Fenyes Estate, a Pasadena Cultural Landmark that is listed on both the National and California Registers of Historic Places. The 1906 Beaux Arts Mansion served as a gathering place for prominant artists, writers, musicians and scientists... and was also the Finnish Consulate from 1947-1964! You may recognize it as a location in various movies, our favorite being the Peter Sellars film "Being There."But that's not all. The Museum's historic structures also include the Curtin House, a French-style residence designed in 1915 by Sylvanus Marston... and, of all things, the Finnish Folk Art Museum (which was used in Consulate days as a sauna and guest house)! And don't forget the Museum's History Center, built in phases from 1993 to 2000, which houses among other things an environmentally-controlled archival storage area! And then, of course, there are the grounds. During the early years the property included two greenhouses and an "insectorium," where Dr. Fenyes pursued his "entomological studies" (or so he said). Today they present a shady oasis of towering trees and abundant ferns. Hundreds of exotic crinum lillies and amaryllis belladonna bloom throughout the spring and summer months beside a meandering stream that cuts across the property. So what more could you ask for? A cache, of course! Your GPS will lead you to a quiet section of the garden where, if you're stealthy, you should be able to find the film canister without much trouble. Just pretend to be stunned by the surroundings... which might not be such an act after all.The Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12-5, but the gardens are accessible all the time from various directions. Plan enough time to enjoy the water, koi, trees and grass... and good luck!
