Consider the light hearted, non-edible items like pickle
telephones, pickle jewelry from earrings to pendents, pickle golf
putters, pickle trophies, traditional German pickle Christmas tree
ornaments, pickle magnets, pickle hats, pickle key fobs, pickle
pens, pickle balloons, scratch'n sniff pickle bumper stickers,
pickle power lapel pins, pickle children's books, pickle memo pads,
pickle caches . . . well, you get the idea.
Pickles have the ability to conjure a smile, and a pucker, for
most people because they are a fun and tasty part of our lives. You
could say this saves energy because it takes only seven muscles to
smile compared to thirty-three muscles to frown! Pickles have been
immortalized in drama, comedy, song, picture, and print. Mothers
and fathers have their special days but that is hard to compare to
International Pickle Week - the last TWO weeks in May. The official
sport of the pickle industry is Pickle-Ball. It is a cross between
badminton and tennis played with a plastic ball hit with paddles
over a center net. This commercially available court game is fast
and fun and suitable for most ages.
So the next time you have dill pickle ice cream, deep fried dill
pickles, or an all-American hamburger covered with pickles remember
the famous history of the pickle, enjoy the zesty flavor, and
consider that you happily contribute to the following statistic: If
all the pickles consumed each year were placed end to end they
would reach the moon and back 8.25 times!
