Geocache Description:

This is a very special place in the South Hills that we would like to share with you. In Shoshone basin between Rogerson and Magic Mountain, along the creek hidden in the brush behind the trees, there are a number of large Hummingbird feeders. We first learned of their location by word of mouth about four years ago. Since then we have tried to visit at least twice a season. My favorites are the colorful Calliope species, which are there in the spring and early summer. The best ways to get here are either by way of the Rogerson Road heading west from Magic Mountain Ski Resort (in early spring there is usually a big snow drift on top of Deadline Ridge that makes this route impassible). Or the route coming from Rogerson heading east (this route will be the best till about mid-May or later depending on the winter’s snow pack ). The feeders are at N 42 13.129’ and W 114 22.561’, approximately ¼ mile from the cache. These coords are also written on the underside of the cache box lid. This is a seasonal cache and should be accessible from mid-April ‘til the snow flies. Every spring on April 28th, the great Hummingbird migration begins in the South Hills. Tiny little Hummingbirds on their way north from Mexico stop by to munch on bugs, sip flower nectar and drink sugar-water. A very dedicated bird lover has faithfully kept several feeders cleaned and filled with the sweet sugar-water for the last 14 years. This supplemental feeding helps to ensure the health and survival of these birds. There are 328 known species in the hummingbird family, “Trochilidae”. Of those, the calliopes, the broad-tailed, the black-chinned and the rufous migrate to Idaho. We hope you enjoy this experience as much as we have. The cache is a large ammo box hidden about ¼ mile west of the hummingbird feeders. Watch for muggles and enjoy!
