19 August, 1942 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

MaisOui & Avrohead: This one did get occasional DNFs, but never so many in a row. We went to check on it, and it is gone. It had a nice, long run but it's time to let it go.

Geocache Description:

Ok, here it is! Maisoui & Avrohead's first cache placement... Everybody has to start somewhere! We chose this area for our first cache because it means a lot to our family, but the area doesn't support a traditional size cache, so you get a micro!

The cache location was chosen to bring people to a spot marking an important date in the history of the City of Hamilton. We call this "Grandpa's Park" because he was instrumental in getting it off the ground. I'm not sure if I would have heard of this park if I was not related to a Dieppe veteran.

This is a small park (3 or 4 properties wide) along the waterfront trail in Hamilton, with several plaques detailing the (doomed) raid on Dieppe, along with the names of every young man from Hamilton who was killed there. In future, it is hoped that the name of every person from Hamilton who went to Dieppe will appear here.

I have noticed that some young people have found the cache, and I thought that you might like to think about this... Avrohead's dad was 21 years, 7 months, and 7 days old when he was taken prisoner at Dieppe. What were you doing or what do you expect to be doing at that age?

The cache is hidden from the people using the waterfront trail by a wall. There are neighbours on either side of the park, but they are used to people hanging around the park and the waterfront trail. There is a limited amount of parking at the West side of the park (call the lake North). The park has now become fully wheelchair acessable, as the parking lot has been paved and the walkway extended to the parking lot. For the more scenic route, park at N 43.17.747 W 79.47.594 This is a larger, fully paved lot less than 1/2km from the cache, with wheelchair accessable paths to the waterfront trail. There are also public washrooms here, open 7:30am to dusk, Apr-Nov. If you are lucky, a ship will go through the canal while you are here. Wave to the sailors!

This is supposed to be an easy one to find and to remove - no tools needed. Please replace the container as found, including the camouflage. When placed, the cache did contain a teeny tiny pencil wrapped up inside the log, but you might want to bring a writing instrument!
