Geocache Description:

Welcome to the first GeoScavenger Hunt!

After more than 400 cache finds it’s about time I placed a cache or two myself. In the spirit of TEAM KFWB GPS’ vast complex caches, which had cachers running all over Vancouver Island, I have gathered creative ideas from caches I have done and tossed in a few tricks of my own to bring you a hunt with as much variety as I could cram into it... while keeping the distances close to home. Please Note: all locations are easily accessible, suitable for younger cachers, and can be visited IN ANY ORDER.
  1. Proceed to approximately 49° 09.632'N 123° 58.278'W and locate a mini cache at the base of a large arbutus tree. Further instructions are contained within. Please leave the instructions in the mini cache and do not leave any trade items here.

  2. You will find a discussion about bridges at 49° 04.121’N 123° 52.734’W What year is mentioned twice?

  3. How many “intertwined heads may represent a mask of the Coast Salish”? Find the answer at 49° 08.448’N 123° 55.583’W then multiply it by the number of depictions of bottomfish; and finally multiply that answer by the number of sites like this in the Nanaimo area. You might need a map to find the last one!

  4. Go to the Brechin Point boat launch near the Departure Bay Ferry Terminal in Nanaimo and find a picnic table under a shelter. What number do you get if you take the distance from the Sealand Market to Cameron Island in meters and subtract the year the nearby statue was carved?

  5. What is the number on a silver tag nailed to a tree at 49° 06.156’N 123° 49.974’W?

  6. Go to the Chinese Cemetery in Nanaimo. What year was Mrs Mah Sze Wong (who lived a nice long 97 years) born?

  7. Make your way to 49° 09.752’N 123° 53.535’W and search for a magnetic micro cache containing further instructions. NOTE: Depending on the time of day this area can be extremely busy or completely deserted. Please use discretion when retrieving and replacing the micro.

  8. Find the 7 digit number on the bottom left of the power pole tag directly across the road from 2435 Myles Lake Road (listen for the hound dog who lives at this nice log house) If you add 4 and then divide by 3 you will be left with a very important 6 digit number.

  9. To find out what year Uncle Charlie (not “Charlie”) was born proceed to location “I” on the map found in Question #4.

  10. William & Sara had 10 children (from the time she was 20 until she was 36!) and all lived long, and we hope happy, lives ranging from 69 to 90 years. Go to a cairn at 433037E 5441763N One child lived the same number of years as their father, and one lived the same number of years as their mother. What number do you get if you add together the years these two children were born?

  11. Go to 49° 07.823’N 123° 55.311’W. Inside the door (think yellow, not orange) to the immediate left, search for “News to Enjoy While Dining”… which is free! What are the last for digits of the contact phone number for this publication?

  12. Time for a little compass work… go to #4 as indicated on the map in Question #4. (Note: you want the #4 in a circle, not a square) Find the distance in meters from the center of the compass to a distant white and green navigational light that lies due East. (Note that it’s a Light, not a Buoy or a Fog Signal). Now search on the opposite bearing of SSW for a 10 digit number (grouped 3-3-4). What number do you get if you divide the distance by the sum of the last 4 individual digits of the 10 digit number? (eg: 1121 = 1+1+2+1=5)

To get to a spot near the final cache, assume all your answers are in meters. Take the answer to question 1 and add the answers from questions 2 through 6, then subtract the answer from question 7. This will give you the Northing. Next, take the answer to question 8 and add the answers from questions 9 through 11, then subtract the answer from question 12. This will give you the Easting. At this position a small piece of orange and white flagging has been tied to a branch to confirm your location… the cache is hidden under forest debris at the base of a large arbutus about 50m to the SW. Please watch your step!

Good Luck and have fun exploring South Nanaimo!
