Geocache Description:

The 2nd of 12 caches placed broadly along the Ribble Way - this one is located around the city of Preston.

The Ribble Way is a long distance walk of 69 miles, commencing at the Dolphin Inn at Longton at the Ribble estuary, passing through Preston, Penwortham, Ribchester, Clitheroe, Gisburn, and along the upper reaches of the Ribble via Settle, Stainforth, to its source on the moors at Gavel Gap, beyond Ribblehead in North Yorkshire.

Preston is England's newest city but is actually an ancient place dating back to 1080. Culturally, Preston has much to be proud about including - the Grade I listed Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston Guild Hall, Museum of Lancashire, Victorian Parks & Gardens, and the National Football Museum - home to FIFA's historic collection.

This is a 6 stage multi cache. Gather clues from the first 5 stages to lead you to the final cache on stage 6.

Stage 1

The hunt starts close to the massive dock gates which saw many a large ship pass through when Preston was a working dock.

Using the published co-ordinates gather the following information.

What six letter object is this a sculpture of?

A = The numerical value of the first letter plus the numerical value of the fourth letter.

B = The numerical value of the first letter plus the numerical value of the third letter.

Stage 2

The next stage takes you to St Walburges Church designed by Joseph Hanson in 1854. The church features a 309 ft spire, timber beam roof, rose window and a 14th Century War Memorial altar.

Go to N 53 45.787 W 002 42.941 and look east towards the church.

Now gather the following information.

How many arched windows at the top of the church and how many doors do you see?

C = The number of arched windows.

D = The number of arched windows less the number of doors.

Stage 3

The next stage takes you to the football ground.

Go to N 53 46.380 W 002 41.331

Now gather the following information.

Which famous two word name do you see here?

E = The numerical value of the second letter of the first word.

F = The number of letters in the second word.

Stage 4

The next stage takes you to Winckley Square in the business district.

Go to N 53 45.370 W 002 42.054

Now gather the following information.

Locate the statue of a famous person and examine the words carved into the plinth.

G = The total number of words.

H = The total number of letters in the third word.

Stage 5

The next stage takes you St Mary's Parish Church in Penwortham on the south side of the river. The oldest parts of the church date from the 14th century and it is build on the site of a former motte & bailey castle.

Go to N 53 45.373 W 002 43.3974

Now gather the following information.

Locate the grave of Frank Foster and note the year of his death and also how old he was when he died.

I = The first numeral of his age less the second numeral.

J = The last numeral of the year minus one.

Stage 6

The final cache can be found by completing the co-ordinates below.
