Amherst State Park Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mr.Yuck: Darn, I made a really cool container for this one! But I am indeed eventually going to kill all my caches on this site, so might as well do it now.

Geocache Description:

Yep. The name of the cache is correct. Amherst State Park, in beautiful Amherst, N.Y.

Don't look so confused; you may have been there before. One of the oldest existing caches in the area, Glen Falls Aquaview (GC2979) is located within the limits of the new State Park, according to Yahoo Maps.

Amherst State Park was dedicated in opening ceremonies in May 2000, attended by Gov. George Pataki. It sits on 77 acres of land formerly owned by the Sisters of St. Francis Convent in Williamsville.

You can visit the Sisters of St. Francis website's section on Amherst State Park here: wmsvlfranciscans.org

The entrance to Amherst State Park is located at 400 Mill Street in Williamsville, and there is a large sign that you can't possibly miss, although the sign for St. Mary's apartments is much more prominent. Park at N 42° 58.374' W078° 44.907'. This is a small parking lot dedicated for users of the State Park, and is seperate from parking for the senior apartments in the old convent building. You can get a map of the parking coords from the mapquest link at the bottom of this description.

We have taken care to hide the cache in a low traffic area of the park, but we would strongly suggest a side trip .14 miles southeast of the cache area, where there is a nice footbridge over Ellicott Creek, and many creekside trails. There is even a small island that can be waded to without getting your feet too wet. The Glen Falls Aquaview cache is a mere 550 ft. from the foot bridge, and easily accessable using the existing trails. I could be wrong, but you probably don't need to cross the footbridge to find Aquaview :-)

There is also a large orchard here, where the Sisters grew their own fruit. Observant cachers have noted botanical rarities such as a Mulberry tree (near the parking coords) and Currant bushes (near the cache). Be sure to check out the planted spruce forest near the cache, now 50 ft. tall spruce neatly planted in rows; try getting GPS coverage in there!

The cache started out in 2004 as a .30 cal ammo box, but has been replaced several times, and is currently a Camo stainless steel thermos converted to a Geocache, and listed as a small. Please take care to re-hide the cache as you found it. The park (and area around this cache) were quite devastated by the freak snowstorm of October 12th, 2006!! Plenty of charred timber in the area (from a lightning strike, I'm sure), and terrain rating raised to 2.5 stars.
