The landscape itself looks like a grass covered lunarscape mainly due to the waste of centuries of lead mining. For over 2000 years and more the Romans, and ancient people before them mined for lead here, the Romans exporting lead from here all over the empire. Even up until the late 19th century mining of lead took place here on the Mendips. The presence of the Romans here can be seen by a Roman fort if one looks in a northerly direction, although the earthworks are a little difficult to pick out with an untrained eye, map and some pre-knowledge of its existance. Many of the roads are also laid on the course of the Roman roads. Evidence of Bronze Age man can also be found in nearby roundbarrows. Some henges dating to Neolithic man, circa 2180 BC, are also to be found, namely Priddy Circles.
