Geocache Description:

In 1927, Edwin D. and Jeanette Barnhill opened the DeLand Hotel for the West Volusian Snowbirds. E.D. was notorious for starting up the first bus line from DeLand to Daytona (His buses were constructed using the connection of two Model T Fords to be ‘open-aired’). The original hotel had a sprinkler system; forty rooms with sinks, a closet, and a living area; and twenty bathrooms with tubs and toilets. This made for a luxury hotel (Two rooms sharing a bathroom and a sprinkler system were luxurious back then). Sadly, Jeanette died a year after the hotel opened, and E.D. was declared insane the following year.

In 1928, Attorney Mary S. Howarth, the first female lawyer to practice law in Florida, bought the hotel and owned it for several decades (Rates were between two and four bucks in the thirties). The hotel was used and changed very little until 1985 (During the seventies, it was re-named The Landmark Hotel). The Barnhill Corporation purchased the Landmark in 1985. The building’s plumbing was removed, but then it was sealed shut for almost twelve years. It became an eyesore and a home for vermin and vagrants. In 1987 it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

In December 1996, John and Brett Soety purchased the Barnhill Corporation and its only asset, The Landmark Hotel. After three years of re-designing, re-building, and decorating, the Soety brothers to honor the Pennsylvania craftsmen of the past and present and their families opened the DeLand Artisan Inn. The Inn has almost 2500 square feet of banquet space, private meeting and dining room and eight hotel suites, each with full amenities. The Inn has an art gallery, a restaurant, a lounge, and an outside patio. Florida Magazine voted it the 2nd Best “Inn” in the state of Florida.

The cache container was painted the same color as the item it is ‘stuck’ to (Chryst, the owner, provided the paint for the cache … Thanks, Chryst!)

When you ascend to this cache, look out for the window that has been busted out with a baseball. You will walk by many people looking out of their windows, but they will not seem to mind you being there. Do keep an eye out for the muggles who are not staying in one of the apartments/hotel rooms – heh.

Rare earth magnets rock!
