Geocache Description:

Park at N54 21 602 W002 11 716 (SD87409 96073) and take care crossing the road. Cache location can be viewed from the road (just!) 'Contouring is really the only way forward'!

Beautiful Swaledale the land of rest,
Beautiful Swaledale I love thee the best,
The land is set in a cultivate style,
The extension of Swaledale is twenty long mile.
(Old Yorkshire Ballad)

Possible one of the finest views of Upper Swaledale is the view from Butter Tubs Pass above Cliff Side, where the narrow upper dale begins to widen out towards Thwaite. The Buttertubs Pass links Swaledale and Wensleydale. The pass gets its name from two groups of deep limestone potholes on either side of the road. They are fenced now and those on one side have steps leading down to them. The name is supposed to come from their usage as cool stores for butter that farmers travelling the path had failed to sell at market. The butter was lowered down on ropes into the cool depths to keep until next market day.The views up the valley are quite spectacular. Enjoy!
