The title of this sculpture, Zenobia’s Throne intrigued me. Who
was Zenobia? While I do not know the artist’s inspiration for his
work, this is what I learned about Zenobia. Zenobia (born 241 A.D.)
was the wife of Odenathus, king of Palmyra. Palmyra was located in
what is now modern day Syria. After her husband was murdered,
Zenobia ruled Palmyra in proxy for her young son. Zenobia loved
being a ruler. She was also a risk taker and wanted Palmyra to
become a world power. She led the troops in battle, but was not
always successful, especially against the mighty Romans. Zenobia
was considered a worthy opponent so after her capture she did not
receive the harsh treatment that other women of the day received.
Instead she was granted a pension, a home and freedom to wander
through Rome. It is said that Zenobia even married a Roman senator.
