Geocache Description:

Halls Bay

Halls Bay

The cache is located at the top of Wolf Head in Goodyears Cove Park. On the west side of the cove is a high cliff of red Silurian volcanic breccia. Large angular blocks of red lava up to 4m across are contained in a finer red matrix of volcanic ash; the whole was deposited onshore by an exploding volcano, similar to Vesuvius in Italy, or Mount St. Helen's in the northwest USA. For a closer look at the deposit, walk part way around the shore ***be careful of falling rocks*** From a small stream at the east end of the park, stairs lead to a trail. Take the right trail to go to Wolf Head. The left trail leads up the hill offering a great view of West Bottom and West Pond. Just before reaching Wolf, a rough trail on your left takes you to a newly cleared lookout over looking Springdale with a great view of the head of Halls Bay. Caution should be exercised at the top as there are no guard rails along the edge. Sections of caribou moss can be very slippery, especially when wet. Two bald eagles were hanging out in the area the day we placed the cache. The cache is in a ammo can.
