Geocache Description:

This geocache is for the person who enjoys a drive in the country and a hike that is definitely off the beaten path. This cache is located on North Dakota public school land. It is very rugged land and all native prairie. The terrain is steep hills and very rocky. Use caution around this area as the sandstone rocks can be slippery whether they are wet or dry, and they can be unstable at times. I’ve always found this area to be quite interesting to hike in and the more time you have to explore it, the more interesting things you will find. There are animal dens, there are names of local pioneers carved in the sandstone rocks, wild flowers, etc. There are even indications that the Native Americans used this area as a lookout point and also a place to get a drink of water after a rain from the hollows in the sandstone rock. Who put those hollows in the rock, we’re not sure. This cache should be accessible year round but avoid using the low maintenance road during wet or heavy snow conditions. There is a good gravel road that will get you to the parking area from the south or west. In the event that there is livestock in the area of the cache, they will, in most cases move out to another part of this pasture and not pose any problem for you.

In order to get to the starting point you will need to travel to these coordinates: N 47° 04.345 and W 100° 30.986 or thereabouts. Find a safe place to park your vehicle. Remember! Grass can easily catch fire from a hot exhaust so be cautious where you park. Begin your hike by crossing the fence and heading towards the two large outcropping of rocks you will see to the east. Once you reach the top you will have a view like the Native Americans had when they were searching for buffalo. From this point you will need to continue to the cache coordinates.

Other spots you will want to check out can be found by merely changing the decimal minutes to N .230 & W .428 which will take you to the rock outcropping I call Catchwater. Look for the hollows in the rock above the areas where the locals have carved their names in the sandstone rock.

Changing the decimal minutes to N .227 & W .490 will take you to an animal den most recently used by porcupines, but in most other years by raccoons. How it got hollowed out like this, were not sure! Look around, you’ll find others.

Another point to make is that this cache site has many interesting spots for taking photo’s so don’t forget to bring a camera or you can use the one placed in the cache. If you take a photo with the cache camera, please record the # when you log your find on your computer. When the camera is full, I'll develope them and post them with this cache.

The cache container is an ammo can. When placed, it contained:
A log book, a camera, many of the usual trade items as well as some special trade items.
