Within this fenced enclosure lies an old grave yard. The earliest burial is believed to have been 1844. This area was used primarily by the Bale Family, the last residents of New Salem. In 1900 nine of their graves were removed to nearby cemetery. It is not believed that any of the villagers of New Salem, in its heyday, were buried here.
