Geocache Description:

Park at the West Fork Day use parking lot on Hwy 39. The cache is off the lower Bear Creek trail just above it's confluence with the West fork of the San Gabriel River.

Pasadena historian Hiram Reid relates how Bear Canyon, a tributary of the lower West Fork of the San Gabriel River received it’s name: “In 1891 or 92 two or three hunters camped in the upper part of the canyon. One night a bear was caught by the hind foot in a heavy steel trap which they had set. He gnawed off his own leg and hobbled away on the bleeding stump, leaving his foot in the trap. The hunters soon discovered this in the morning, and following the bear’s bloody trail, they shot him. They nailed the entrapped foot up on a tree at their camp, where it was seen for several years after. From this incident that portion of the West Fork of the San Gabriel River ever since has been called Bear Canyon.ORIGINAL CACHE ITEMS:LOG BOOK & 2 PENCILSMAULER BATTLEBOT TRAVEL BUGFLASH CAMERA (PLEASE TAKE YOUR PICTURE)RUBBER CHICKEN (FROM NEVER FIND THE BODY CACHE)ELECTRIC POCKET FANPLASTIC COMBTEAM WHYACHI DECALSUPPRISE HAND BUZZERTAPE MEASURE KEYCHAINGREEN HOT WHEEL (FROM HILL OF BEANS CACHE)PLASTIC LIZZARDPLASTIC SNAKEPLASTIC FROG
