I suspect that many locals are not aware of this nice little area
and hike. Picnic tables, a fire ring and a fairly icky looking
portable restroom are available. Slightly better restrooms are
available at the lake parking entrance. I believe that camping is
also allowed in the area of the parking coordinates. The lake
supports fishing, and I received a report from people fishing there
when I placed the cache that they had caught a few bluegills. I won
this cache at the Saxman’s campout event in New Mexico and have put
Team GPSaxophone as a co-owner. Hopefully the Saxman family will
get out here some day to find the cache themselves.
Reaching the area often requires driving a few miles on minimum
maintenance roads that could be a little difficult when muddy. The
hike to the cache is approximately .7 mile one way/ 1.4 miles round
trip and provides some nice views of the surrounding area. During
summer, the area supports quite a few wildflowers. The trail to the
cache appears to go off on down to the lake dam, so additional
hiking can be accomplished if desired.
Stay on the trail and watch for ticks. We picked up a few during
our hike. Ticks are everywhere this year. I see log after log
mentioning them. Note that if you try to shortcut along a small
corn field that you will miss one of the best views of the
hike!
You are looking for an ammo box with a geocaching label. The
cache contains a couple of first finder prizes donated by
Groundspeak, log book and pens, and various toys etc.
Note: various hunting seasons are now in effect. This area
allows some limited hunting. The walk to the cache generally keeps
you in the open, but wearing bright colors or orange and respecting
hunters is advised.
