Geocache Description:

You will need an auto, bike, or other vehicle to complete most of this mystery cache. Calculator may also help. Take good notes, and use the written clues at each location.

Welcome To Idaho Falls! This History Mystery Cache is intended to get you out and about the various historical or interesting places in our community. As you do so, you will also take a symbolic walk through time, perhaps discovering more about Idaho Falls then many of its own citizens really know. Please allow 6 hours to complete this cache. Also keep in mind that you will need to enter some facilities that may close at night, thus this multi cache should be done only during daylight hours. (** Indicates another cache and ## indicates a benchmark is listed near this coordinate. You may wish to download these caches/benchmarks and log them while completing this multicache). Waypoints 4,5,6,7,9 are within walking distance of each other, and it is the preferred method for logging them.To begin, you need to know what much of the landscape looked like in Idaho Falls 200 years ago.

1)## Your first clue of what the terrain looked like will be found behind the fence at 43.28.354 112.02.602 What do you find behind the fence here? ________________.

2) Where you find these you often find _______________. (To help you fill the blank, subtract 0.0.053 from the latitude, and 0.0.152 from the longitude as listed above. This will take you to a sign. There is a descriptive 3-letter word of this location that when viewed without your glasses may appear as 3 numbers. Assume that they are numbers and add them to the latitude below like so - 0.0.???)

3) To actually see what much of this area looked like and why you might want what was behind the fence at the first coordinate, find 43.26.033 112.02.602 (Don't forget to add the previous clue to the latitude - otherwise you will be miserably confused!) If your math is correct, you should find lots of ______________. Which also fills the blank in clue #2. Take a look to the southeast. You will see a large mountain not far off. The name of this mountain is also a clue. If you know it - Great - If not, you'll learn it soon!

4) After the late 1700's many _________________ ____________________ came to this region. ( the clue can be found at 43.29.677 112.02.545 ) Many of our area mountains, valleys, lakes, and streams are named after these people.

5) In the mid to late 1800's, _____________________came to this area. (Near 43.29.873 112.02.519 are some monuments with a predominant "P" word. This is the answer) This was wilderness, with many hardships, and little civil comforts

6)**## This actual location was not very conducive to crossing by wagon. An enterprising individual built a ferry north of here that was used for some time. The same year the ferry was completed, a closer structure was being built to facilitate crossing the Snake River. How close? Well - it's modern full size replica can be found at 43.29.548 112.02.723. Subtract 0.0.39 from this longitude to find a sign that will also help you answer the questions below.Add 0.0.263 to the latitude and subtract 0.0.87 from the longitude to find a miniature replica of the same structure. Each coordinate will help you answer these following questions.Who built the structure? _____________________________.What is the name of the canyon it spanned? _______________ _______________.What was the first name given to this locale? ________________ ________________.What was the second name of this locale? ________________ __________________.(The last name of the person who built the structure is also for whom the mountain is named.)

7)** Not everyone was impressed with these efforts, and in fact one person would just as soon have nothing to do with any of it. 43.30.089 112.02.766 will reveal the name of this person and a little more about his story. What is the name of the island? _________________________________

8)**## Many people think that the second name of this locale came because of an observation right here, but in fact it was named because of something found much further north, closer to the ferry. You will find more at 43.36.112 112.03.528 What is the name of this island? _______________________.What year was this monument placed? ____________________.

9)## This edifice has become an important landmark to the city. They come in all sorts of designs and are all over the world with over 100 modern structures now in use, but this particular design has not been replicated - a very unique building. A sign that a town may become civilized is when structures such as these are constructed. You will need to go to the center to get the answer to some clues. This building is # _________________ of #________________ total. What year was it built? ________________________.You will also need to get a little flyer from this location that has a picture of the building on the front and a map on the back. The map will guide you to more clues. If you attempt to do the next clue without geting the flyer - YOU WILL BE LOST!

10)## Using you newly acquired and oversimplified map, leave this location and get yourself over to the road that parallels the railroad track. You'll notice that the RR switches sides on the map, and as you travel north on the road, you'll know where this occurs. Travel approx. one mile north of this switch location. You should find yourself by a very large greenspace. If not, continue north until you do - but don't go past the Brave! At this point you are well off the map, but very close to the clue. Travel around the greenspace until you find the official entrance. Park near the log building and enter the main doors. This was a world class facility when it was designed, and is still a difficult place to score well. Inside, you will find a blueprint on the wall. It is dated. This is an almost guaranteed symbol that a community has settled down, and become civilized when it creates one of these! (Be sure to save your map!)What is the date this blueprint was approved? ____________________________

11) 43.28.577 112.02.463 should take you to the dead center of town. Right near this coordinate is two markers, side by side, that if read in conjunction, would make the superstitious leave in a hurry! It is predominate and visible from the lane. If this clue stumps you think about October, Scooby Doo, and full moons. Two Words. What does the two markers say? _____________ ________________

12) While things at the location above may not be changing for a while, things downtown certainly do! At 43.29.435 112.02.305 two older buildings have been combined to create a vastly different facility. I'd strongly recommend visiting here, although entry is not required to log this waypoint. What were the two previous buildings? (only one is acceptable if you can't get both) ___________________________________________________________What is the current name of this facility?_____________________________________

13)**## The old was replaced by the new. Add 0.0.073 to the latitude, and 0.0.220 to the longitude to find the new. More importantly, a statue exists here that commemorates at least one of those stored within its interior. What is the title you should find within as indicated by the statue? ____________________________________________________________________

14)** Towns and cities alike create waste, which typically is stored in a landfill. The first major landfill for this community was located at 43.30.826 112.03.134 Lots of iron has been deposited here, and while your GPS may work, your compass won't. It's now become a nice location, which most people never know it is built upon junk. At the top of the heap, is more steel that serves a well-deserved purpose, and is the newest of several such in our city. What is the name of this venue? _______________________________________What is the name of this steel structure?_____________________________________Alphabetically, who is the first person to have a "dot" next to their name and what does it signify? _________________________________________________________________DO NOT GO BEYOND THIS POINT BEFORE COMPLETING ALL THE ABOVE CLUES AND WAYPOINTS!

15) Well, Hopefully you have had some fun journeying through time as well as our streets. To find the final waypoint and the cache, you need to work out the following clues:____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ___
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____
10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17

The 1st letter of the clue from waypoint 1) fills lines 1,10,16.The 7th letter of the clue from waypoint 5) fills lines 7, 15.The 2nd letter of the 2nd word of the clue from waypoint 8) fills lines 8,11.The 4th letter of the clue from waypoint 7) fills line 9.The 2nd letter of the clue from waypoint 2) or 3) fills line 3.Assigning a number to each letter, such as 1 for A, 2 for B etc., the following code should finish the phrase:8 = line 2; 13 = line 4, 12, 13; 2 = line 5; 5 = line 6, 14, 16, 17) If you have properly decoded the phrase, you are in business! Now look at the map you picked up earlier in clue 9). Only one bridge is shown. The name of the street is also shown. On this street, west of the bridge, and on the north will be a location that is relevant to the phrase above. It is a place similar in function to the little building you entered to get your map at clue 9). It's an appropriate place to end this multicache, as it lends itself to more discovery of your own. Enter the door, approach the desk, and let the assistant know you are geocaching and are here to geocache. She/He will provide you with the final cache.

If you have made it this far, you are one outstanding geocacher! It has taken 6 rewarding months to get all the data, approval, and logistics together to produce this cache. I hope the 6 hours you have spent discovering Idaho Falls were as equally rewarding. The Rugger and Wasabi255
