Peden's Stone Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

dogastus: As this cache is known by a number of local non-cachers and is now prone to being vandalised, it saddens me that I think it is appropriate to archive this cache now. Many thanks to all the cachers that have visited it.

Geocache Description:

In the 17th century, King Charles II was enforcing the Episcopal system which is where bishops and the king held power in the church. A lot of people believed in the Presbyterian system which was much more democratic. To promote their views, people would hold illegal "conventicles", often in the open air. Hundreds of Covenanters were thought to have been hunted down and executed. One such covenanter was Alexander Peden. He was born in 1626 and was educated at Glasgow University. He became Minister of New Luce, Dumfries and Galloway in 1660. He preached at conventicles around the country but was forced to flee to Ireland in 1665. He returned in 1673 but was captured and was imprisoned on Bass Rock for five years. A stone (Peden's Stone) marking a place where Alexander Peden preached in the open air can be found on a hill just outside Harthill.
