Geocache Description:

This is your chance for a good aerobic workout. Forget about going to the gym, grab your gear, and head for the woods. The first and only waypoint and the cache are easy to find so your challenge is with the terrain. I had thought about two caches for this adventure and also about using one of the locations for a bonus cache. In the end I just made it a multi-cache even though there is some distance between waypoint and cache.

This is a chance to use a combination of a little driving between points, walking and/or biking. Your starting point on Rd 4632 will be obvious as you will be blocked by down trees. This is a good opportunity to get your bike and start towards your objective. You will have to carry your bike over a few trees to get to the next piece of rideable road. At the start of a long straight stretch numerous trees loom ahead so it is best to set the bike against a tree and start walking. This point is approximately 0.5 miles from the first waypoint and should be obvious to you.

You will still be able to follow the road for a ways before you take to the brush. When you leave the road you will encounter Lodgepole blowdown for a while before it clears out at the base of a steep slope. Be careful negotiating this blowdown as the logs are slick and the bark on them is loose. Take your time and plan your route through this jackstraw mess. All of this blowdown is a result of mountain pine beetle infestation over the last decade or so.

This area is known for large elk herds, deer, eagles, osprey, pine marten, as well as other birds and animals. You will also see magnificent old-growth Douglas-fir, Ponderosa pine, and other tree species. You might even learn to identify Engelmann spruce if you use a branch as a handhold on your way up or down the slope. And of course the ever present Lodgepole blowdown. Also, as the weather warms you will be greeted by the swarming masses of mosquitoes and biting flies.

The first waypoint will offer you a magnificent view of this country. Access to this point is from the uphill side and should be obvious once there. This is a black 35 mm film canister with coordinates for the cache and a clue that needs to be unscrambled. Look at the base of a rock and behind two fist sized rocks and a Western White Pine cone.

Back to your vehicle as a short drive is necessary followed by biking or walking a straight stretch of road before you head into the woods again. This area also has a large amount of Lodgepole pine blowdown so be careful. I found the blowdown to be somewhat less if you walked along the base of the slope. Take your time!

The cache is an ammo box. Enjoy this area and the abundant wildlife that gathers here. Listen and you will hear the shrill whistle of the little pika.
