Geocache Description:

Becareful of the open pits and septic tank. Area is sandy you walk as much or as little as you want.

Camp Cody opened in July 1916 and covered about 2000 acres of land. The camp got its name from the famous buffalo hunter, William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill Cody). At one time, 30,000 troops were housed in a tent city at the military training camp. Later, it became the home of the Holy Cross Sanatorium. A facility ran by nuns for those suffering from tuberculosis until it burned in March 1939. (More info can be obtained by doing a search for Camp Cody Deming, New Mexico)There are a few ways to get to this cache. The easiest accessible way for most 2 wheel drive vehicles is to take the frontage road on the north side of I-10, head west to Belgian Road, and turn north. After stopping to check for fast moving trains, cross the railroad tracks. Go to and cross over county road DO11. This will put you onto a two-wheel path road at N 32 16.422 W 107 48.168. Continue to head north. There are several sandy trails to take and explore. If you have a 4 wheel drive and want a little more excitement you can also get to this location by taking west 2nd Street. Turn north off of 2nd Street onto Peru Mill Road and go to N 32 17.337 W 107 47.460. If the riverbed is dry turn west and proceed under the railroad tracks. If it is wet, or too sandy, abort the mission and revert to the above mentioned directions. Watch out for ATV’s and dirt bikes. They like this area. Also, there are some deep pits holes, an old holding pond and a lager septic tank. All are open. Some are very deep and some contain snakes. So be careful as you stroll across the sands of this historical landmark!
