The CCC employed jobless young men (18-25) during the Great Depression for the rebuilding of our environmental infrastructure. Wages for enrollees ranged from $30 to $45 per month! During the 9-yr. history of the CCC, workers replenished forests, built roads, erected dams & reservoirs & planted over two billion trees. There were 15 camps in New Mexico employing over 24,000 young men.
This cache site was part of the Reclamation's CCC program to rehabilitate the storage, distribution & water control structures. The area was subject to intense localized rainfalls of short duration that had caused severe damage to local irrigation systems. This flood control structure was Box Canyon Dam - Rio Grande Project BR-39.
In the cache is a reprint of "Your CCC - A handbook for Enrollees". PLEASE do NOT remove from cache but thumb through the book - it is priceless! We have highlighted a few choice paragraphs. One example: "You Are Your Own Washman - Washing clothes is just a matter of getting a cake of laundry soap and going to it."
