Visit a lovely meadow summit in the Coast range.
Bald Mountain(aka Monmouth peak) is located west of the town of Pedee in Polk county. The northwestern half is federal BLM land with a special management designation as an ACEC- "Area of Critical Environmental Concern". The southeastern half -recently logged is owned by Boise Cascade.
From 223 (Kings Valley Highway), take Pedee Creek road west 2.1 miles, and turn left onto a gravel road. This is Bald Mountain Rd, also called 1500 by the Boise Cascade numbering system. Travel 4 miles up this well maintained logging road through a beautiful Alder forest(BLM), followed by a massive clearcut/reprod. Turn left onto 1440 and travel another 3 miles and turn right on 1439. Go about a mile and turn at a spur road on your right- about a 160 degree turn, going uphill.

Drive up this spur road a mile until it ends and park. Now you will take a short, steep (but not too scratchy) bushwack following critter trails about 200 feet uphill to reach the meadows on top of Bald mountain. Find the cache -on the western edge of the meadow. Beware of boomer holes and giant ant mounds underfoot!
After making your trade, you can continue southerly, staying on the highest part of the meadowy ridge until you come to a gravel road. Take a left for a short side trip to explore the true summit in 1/4 mile and visit the communications towers, an old lookout site, a few remaining Noble firs(uncommon in the coast range), and a benchmark. Bring bug spray in the summer. Enjoy this little known oasis!
