Geocache Description:

‘Tis true…this cache was two years in the planning, one year in the making and one hour in the placing. Visit in June, July or August to experience the lush fern forests in what we’ve named Fern Valley. If you come at the right time you’ll see and hike through wild mountain ferns over six feet tall.

This is a beautiful scenic hike up a canyon bottom following a babbling brook. Later in the year you’ll see the remains of all the over-growth. In the winter this is a great snowshoe hike. Watch for deer, moose, and rattlesnakes. How to get there: Start at Beus Canyon Trailhead (at the top of 46th Street in Ogden, Utah, N41*10.640, W111*55.773), follow the trail approximately 1.2 miles east. Parking lot is about 5,097’; the cache is at 6,257’ so it is fairly steep (18% grade avg.) and it’s all up hill, not many flat sections on the trail. But it is a good, well-defined trail. A small cascading waterfall is about .7 miles from the trailhead. Please be careful when you leave the trail to not make a path to the cache. It will be easiest to stay on the trail until the pointer is almost due north. If you continue up the trail you eventually cross the ridge to the south and follow Birch Creek Canyon’s north side east and north toward Mt. Ogden. The north side of the canyon offers spectacular views of the southern ridge especially when there is snow. Continue up the trail another 5 miles or so and you’ll reach Mt. Ogden (and another cache.
