Geocache Description:

Spanning the highest mountain range between the Appalachians and the Rockies, the 54-mile Talimena Scenic Byway opens a showcase of natural beauty during each of the south's four distinctive seasons. One breathtaking panorama follows another as this national forest scenic byway winds along the crests of forested mountains between Talihina, OK and Mena, AR.

This microcache is located at Pipe Springs in the Big Cedar area of the Ouachita National Forest. This is another cache in the Talimena Treasures series. It is just a couple of miles off the Talimena Scenic Drive, so I thought it should be included!

Pipe Springs always flows with good, clean water and I've often seen people filling jugs and drinking from it. It was created in the 1920s by railroaders and loggers who were travelling a mountain railroad spur that no longer exists. They drove a long pipe into the side of a hill and tapped the water table. You can look at it and almost imagine tired loggers pausing here for a drink. All other traces of them are gone. The cache is a camouflaged Altoids sours container. It contains a logbook - you must bring your own pen. The container is big enough to hold some small items, so if you have a trinket or two and want to leave them, go right ahead. Plan to stop here on the way to some other caches in the mountains. There are bathrooms here, picnic tables, a trail and of course, the spring.

NOTE: This cache is a short jaunt OFF the Talimena Drive on U.S. 259. I included it in the Talimena Treasures series because it is the midpoint of the drive, has bathrooms and running water.
