Geocache Description:

Not a walk in the park: Take map, compass and waterGood Luck

For you hikers who like to cache or vice versa:This is a joint venture of Grandpa and his friend, Vern who happens to be quite a history buff.

This is the site of an old boiler that dates back to the early 1900’s. It was used to create steam for an engine. According to the late Walter Casler, a logging railroad expert, this was not a locomotive boiler, but a stationary boiler believed to be a used power for an oil well rig. There are several railroad grades and spurs throughout this area. The hike into the boiler is a beautiful walk. The boiler is located along the scenic Minister Creek. In fact, one end of the boiler is right on the creek’s edge. There are many rocks and rock shelters scattered along the way.

During our hike to place the cache, we saw lots of wildlife and birds. Be prepared to spend some time, for it is approximately a 4 ½ plus mile hike round trip.

Parking is on Forest road #116 @ N41 39.701 W079 13.564

You will come to a gated road which is Forest road #250; follow this road until you come to an intersection with Forest road #420, but stay on #250 which goes straight (even though it is unimproved and there is a mound of rocks and dirt to prohibit vehicular access). Walk along that road for a distance of approximately 1 mile and go straight down the hill to the boiler.

For a longer, more scenic walk; at the intersection of Forest roads #420 and #250, you can bear off at 77 degrees magnetic and walk along the creek. This is also a less steep method of travel. This is where you will pass by the rocks and rock shelters.

This is a small mini cache which contains a few small trinkets and a log sheet (bring your own writing implement as I lost mine on the hike in). The terrain for this cache is a solid 3 or 3.5 depending on the route you chose.

NOTE: Please be sure to mark your vehicle before departing for this cache. A topo map, compass and drinking water would be advisable on hike such as this; this is NOT a short walk in the park! Good Luck, we hope that you enjoy the walk as much as we did placing it.
