Geocache Description:

This cache will lead you along a bike path that was once Route 9W. This section was built in 1907 and remained in use until 1928. Then, the 12-foot wide road was too narrow for growing traffic. Major Welch made plans to divide the road, creating an 18-foot wide, southbound only lane, higher up on Dunderberg Mountain. While construction was being done, federal funds became available. So, the upper road was widened to 30 feet and used for both north and southbound traffic. The new section of road was opened in 1931 and the lower section was closed to traffic. You can hike in from either end of the old road. There is legal parking available. p.s. You'll have plenty of time for searching for geocaches when you're living in a VAN down by the river!
