The Walts Road Site in the Town of Minden is a true multiple use area. Approximately 25 acres of land was purchased by Montgomery County in 2000 and turned over to the Town of Minden. The main purpose of the property was to construct a large pond for the purpose of supplying water to residents in case of an emergency (drought or fire). It quickly became apparent that the property could be used for much more.
Construction on the site began in April of 2001 and was completed in October 2001. Located on the site are the following:
- One large pond stocked with bass and catfish and one small pond.
- One dry hydrant for use by local fire department pump trucks as a year-round supply of water.
- One coin-operated pump for residents to obtain approximately 450 gallons of water. (Many local residents have been using this to obtain water for livestock and for non-potable home uses)
- Three low-berm water impoundments and one pothole for wildlife habitat.
- Approximately 3000 feet of stone nature trail and
a fishing deck (located on the large pond).
- One observation platform located adjacent to a shallow water impoundment overlooking a marsh/wooded swamp.
Funding for various portions of the site came from the following sources:
State Senator Hugh Farley, State Assemblyman Paul Tonko, Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, National Fish and Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Conservation Service,
NYS Community Enhancement Facilities Assistance Program
Maintenance is provided by the Town of Minden
The Montgomery County SWCD and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service provided technical assistance.
There are several picnic tables on site so feel free to bring a pole and a picnic lunch. Be sure to let us know if you see any wood ducks.
